Homemade Paper Clay

Previously I wrote that I would give an evaluation of the new (to me) paper clay formula as an alternative to commercial products (such as Celluclay) using the exact ingredients (toilet paper, linseed oil etc.) so here it is:

  • Spreads easily
  • Molds readily to any desired shape!
  • A fine texture can be achieved
  • Tends to separate as it dries (any gaps will become larger)
  • Has a tendency to crack if applied too thinly
Although I tried to stick to the formula, some of the negative results may be due to the proportions I used or my inexperience. More experimentation is needed.

Homemade Paper Clay

I've been using the commercial product, Celluclay, for my detail work, but yesterday I mixed up a batch of my own paper clay using, basically, Jonni Good's formula and so far the results are impressive! Actually, I had a batch of newspaper pulp all ready to go, so I used that ingredient instead of toilet paper. I imagine the difference will be that I won't get as fine a texture. Once dry, it can be sanded and shaped much more easily than the store-bought product. I'll eventually try her exact formula for a fair evaluation.
